Unlocking Potential with Strawbees for Learners of All Ages and Abilities

How Strawbees Empowers Creativity and Builds Confidence Across Diverse Age Groups.

"He (the student) just put it together and randomly started figuring 'Wait! I'm making triangles, into triangles, connect to triangles'... It's one product that offers more surprises than a lot of other things."

Background

Sharee Pfaff, a Maker Ed Facilitator at Mariners Christian School, has worked extensively with students of different ages and abilities. Through hands-on STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Math) learning, Sharee encourages creativity and problem-solving in her classroom. While she often works with older students, Sharee decided to challenge a group of seven- and eight-year-olds with an advanced project using Strawbees. Initially skeptical about their ability to handle such a complex task, Sharee was astonished by the results, especially when a student with attention challenges created one of the standout designs.

This experience highlighted the versatility of Strawbees as a tool that engages learners of all ages and abilities, offering opportunities for creativity, innovation, and positive recognition.

Implementation

For this particular project, Sharee introduced Strawbees to a group of seven- and eight-year-old students, due to its ability to create open-ended builds and create structures and models using lightweight connectors and straws. Its flexibility makes Strawbees ideal for hands-on exploration, problem-solving, and STEAM education.

Although Sharee had previously done similar activities with older students aged nine and ten, she initially hesitated to bring the project to this younger age group, assuming the complexity might be too much for them. The task involved designing and building creative structures, with the freedom to iterate and experiment.

One student in particular, stood out who often struggled with focus and behavior in the traditional classroom setting, making it difficult for him to gain positive attention from peers. With Strawbees, however, he became fully engaged. The student designed and built a catapult that not only worked exceptionally well but also captured the attention and admiration of his classmates.

His creation became the center of the activity, with other students asking how he built it and attempting to replicate his design.

Outcomes

Versatility Across age Groups

Sharee’s experience demonstrated Strawbees' versatility to engage students in complex STEAM tasks that are traditionally reserved for older age groups. This flexibility makes Strawbees an invaluable tool for classrooms spanning multiple grade levels, as it offers creative challenges suitable for learners at various developmental stages.

Engaging Learners of all Abilities

For the student who struggled with attention and behavior, Strawbees provided an opportunity to shine in a new context. His success with the catapult not only boosted his confidence but also reframed how his peers viewed him. Instead of focusing on disruptions, his classmates admired and copied his design, giving him a sense of accomplishment and positive recognition.

Igniting Creativity and Problem-Solving

The open-ended nature of Strawbees sparked innovation among all students. The student with the catapult was particularly proud of discovering how triangles connected to create strong structures, a moment that built his confidence in his ability to figure things out on his own. His statement, “I didn’t know I could do this,” highlighted how Strawbees can help learners surprise themselves with what they are capable of achieving.

Memorable Experiences That Last

Months after completing the project, the student still remembered his catapult and wanted to share it with his parents. This enduring pride demonstrates the lasting impact of Strawbees projects, as they allow students to connect with their creations in meaningful ways.

Continual Surprises

Sharee noted that Strawbees offers more surprises than other tools, as it encourages students to explore and discover. Unlike pre-defined kits that follow rigid instructions, Strawbees allows learners to imagine, prototype, and innovate in unexpected ways, making every project unique.

"Those kids who see the world so differently, and their experiences in the classroom are not always positive, that gives them an opportunity to get positive attention."
